Body Systems
Project Description
I had seen the sophomores doing this project last year, and I wasn't sure what to think about it when it was assigned. We were assigned a body system, and had to pick another body system that worked with that system. The two systems that we got were the muscular and skeletal systems. The next step was to research the systems and create a model that showed how the two systems worked independently and together. Our model showed how the skeletal system provided support, how the muscular system moved food through the digestive tract, and how the muscular and skeletal system performed voluntary movement while working together. The building got off to a little bit of a slow start, but we were able to work things out and figure out to make the model work. We ended up changing our model from what we had originally had planned, but it worked out. We then had to make a presentation to teach the class about our two systems, and to show them how our model worked and showed the functions of the different systems. You can see the presentation below.

Terms and Definitions
Organ: A part of an organism that is typically self-contained and has a specific vital function, such as the lungs or kidneys in humans
Skeletal System: Support the body, protect the internal organs, provides for movement, store mineral reserves, and provide a site for cell formation.
Cartilage: Connects bones together and can also be used to support weight because of its dense flexibility.
Ligaments: Provide joint stability and prevent movement that might damage a joint
Tendons: Join muscle to bone, and also are capable of transmitting force from muscle to bone
Bones: Support the body, protect internal organs, allow for movement
Muscular System: Permits movement of the body, maintains posture, and circulates blood throughout the body
Smooth or Visceral Muscle: Controlled by the unconscious part of the brain. Found in the stomach, blood vessels and small and large intestine. Move food along the digestive tract
Cardiac Muscle: Found only in the heart and is responsible for pumping blood into the blood vessels and into the circulatory system
Skeletal Muscle: Used to perform voluntary movement
Muscular and Skeletal System: The muscles work by pulling on the tendons, which connect muscle to bone, which moves the bone, creating voluntary movement

Reflection
This project was better than the first one, but not as good as the second. I enjoyed it, but it took longer for our group to find our groove, which made the first bit of the project a little rough. There were some things that I could work on. I need to work on staying on task, because especially this project, I was distracted easily. If I can stay on task more of the time, I would be able to get more work done which would make the whole project better overall. One of the things I did well was that when I was on task, I worked diligently, and was able to get a lot of work done. In addition to this, I think my ability to problem solve some of the problems we encountered helped us out. Another thing that I need to work on is not talking to other groups. It distracts their members and then both them and me are not productive. This creates problems for both groups. If I can work on both of those things, I think that then next project can be even better than the last two.
